English translation

Tubeless and more, we poke our nose into the Intermarché truck
A puncture. A broken vine. An air leak. They are the nightmares of any cyclist and mechanic who struggles every day with attention to detail to win. A chaos of variables that find the solution in the perfect balance of technical prevention. Effetto Mariposa and Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert consolidate the technical partnership for 2022 and continue the path started a year ago.

Incidents that did not hinder Girmay at Ghent-Wevelgem or prevented Hermans from second place in Liège. A good dose of luck, of course. But behind the luck there is always a solid preparation based on quality. And it is precisely in the detail of the small component, as if it were the flapping of a butterfly's wings, that the Swiss company takes care of the products and supplies the technical material to the Belgian World Tour team. Let's discover this relationship together with Alberto De Gioannini, President and owner of Effetto Mariposa.

Invisible but decisive
The products that Effetto Mariposa supplies to the Belgian team are the Caffélatex Tubeless Valve for tubeless conversion, the Caffélatex sealant and the Végétalex sealant. Finally, the Caffélatex Tubeless Strip, a very light tubeless nipple tape, which makes tubeless conversions quick and easy. The mechanics also use Giustaforza, the first torque wrench developed specifically for cycling, an icon for the Swiss brand, conceived and designed by De Gioannini himself.

Products that are hidden in the workshop trucks, or inside the wheels in the middle of the group. This is why adhesives to be placed at the valves were created on the Intermarché input.

«They told us - says De Gioannini - that it is a pity that our products are hidden by their very nature, because being inside the wheels they cannot be seen. So the team asked us for the stickers and we decided to create them to have an additional element of visibility. What is more unique than rare is that a team gives you this possibility ».

The importance of the WorldTour
Communicating the quality of products through social channels and advertising is not easy. Furthermore, the partnership between Effetto Mariposa and Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert was born spontaneously after an explicit request from the team.

From these communications and services, a meeting point was found which benefited both parties, as explained by De Gioannini: "It is an excellent legitimation of the quality of the product. It is clear that in the competition the products are brought to the limit of use. So if they work well for a professional, all the more reason they won't have problems in practical use for an enthusiast.

«Contrary to what happens in Motorsport - he continues - when the brand becomes legitimate, the products used at a competitive level are not the same ones that are marketed for enthusiasts. In the case of the bicycle, however, no. The product we supply to the team is off-the-shelf and production and is what users can buy. Clearly if the team asks for something more, we are happy to supply it and to pass it on to production as soon as possible ».

The importance of feedback

Among the benefits of technically supporting a WorldTour team there are certainly the feedbacks that the bike and Allen key professionals are able to give by testing the materials.
«Mikey Von Kruiningen - continues De Gioannini - is in charge of the mechanics and is happy and satisfied. They told us that Caffélatex is a guarantee for them to reach the finish line. Half of the success and reliability also comes from the tubeless conversion strip. They reported no problems. They have begun to test and use the Végétalex, for the moment not in the race because they prefer to test it further. There have been positive comments ».

Are there other teams knocking on the door? «To some - he continues - we sell sealants. Of course we don't say anything because they have contracts with tire manufacturers and should use their products. And because, not being their technical partners, it is good to respectfully remain anonymous. As for the official teams, the only team is Intermarché and we are happy with that, because the feedback they give us is sufficient for product development. "

Tubeless on everyone's wheels

One of the technical breakthroughs that is covering the pro landscape like wildfire is the advent of tubeless bikes for road bikes. On everyone's lips this word bounces far and wide. What does De Gioannini think of this technical advent, he who was the precursor of the first synthetic latex (Caffélatex) for cycling use on the market?

"The road tubeless tire has been in suspended animation for many years - he replies - because there was the technology, but by not using it professionally it never caught on. Enthusiasts tend
rightly copying the technical choices of high-level riders. The other limitation was that when running with a reduced tire section of around 25 millimeters, tubeless tires did not offer any advantages, due to the reduced volume of air. There was no interest in inflating at lower pressures. Now that 28mm or even more tires are used more and more depending on the type of terrain and the race, it is clear that tubeless has a lot more to offer in so many ways. Moreover, with the data that have come out in terms of rolling resistance, the tubeless seems to offer what was once the prerogative of the tubular ».
