[Test] Cera, detergente e sgrassatore Effetto Mariposa

Marco Toniolo, 01/12/2021

[Test] Mariposa effect wax, detergent and degreaser
Marco Toniolo, 01/12/2021

Effetto Mariposa launches a line of products designed for bike cleaning and chain lubrication. The common thread that unites them is the fact that they are non-polluting, therefore they do not present difficulties for their disposal. Not only that, some of them smell of pine and can not fail to remind you of a famous bubble bath.

It is about:

Flowerpower Wax (chain lubricant with sunflower wax),
Allpine Extra (degreaser with pine oil),
Chain eater (chain washing device),
Cog Brush (sprocket brush),
Allpine Light (biodegradable bicycle cleaner).
We received the products a few weeks ago and were able to try them in the perfect season to put them to the test, autumn. From rain to snow, passing through dry days, we have encountered all kinds of conditions.

Flowepower Wax

The most attentive will surely have noticed in this article that Effetto Mariposa was strangely interested in the world of lubrication. The reason lies in the new sunflower wax-based lubricant. In the manufacturer's description these are the characteristics:

Flowerpower Wax is an aqueous emulsion of natural waxy compounds, with the right viscosity to penetrate inside the chain links, where lubrication is most important. Once the water has evaporated, a thick layer of wax remains firmly anchored to the metal, a real anti-friction pad. The chain will not be dry to the touch - given the layer of wax that also protects the outside - but it will not be greasy or sticky and will not retain dirt.

Flowerpower Wax has a high percentage of wax. While many competing products are around 30%, Flowerpower Wax exceeds 50% (percentage by weight - dry residue after evaporation of water) of wax content compared to water. The result is the formation of a thicker anti-abrasion layer for the same product applied, with great benefits in terms of duration and efficiency of the transmission.

Another exclusive feature is the sunflower wax content. The wax obtained from sunflower seeds has really interesting properties for cycling use. It adheres strongly to metal and resists water, prolonging the effectiveness of the lubrication even in the event of rain or involuntary washing. It also has excellent mechanical properties, necessary to withstand the constant stresses of pedaling.

Effetto Mariposa declares that a single application of Flowerpower Wax allows you to travel 300km on a paved road in the absence of heavy rain. I tested it on two different mountain bikes, Pivot Switchblade and Canyon Spectral CFR, after cleaning the chains thoroughly as directed by Daniel.

First of all I must say that the lubrication is excellent. By applying the wax the night before the ride, the chain flows which is wonderful when you get on the saddle. My tours involve many fords and, lately, they have been characterized by wet ground and a bit of mud. After having necessarily washed the bike, on my return from about 1500 meters of positive difference in altitude and 40km, I always applied the Flowerpower with a dry chain, without having had to clean it because it was not really dirty.

The chain never got bothered during the ride and the sliding was always very good, better than I had expected. In fact, I usually use wet oil in my areas, even in summer, precisely because of the many fords and springs.

After a few weeks of use, the result was clear. No sludge, no abrasive sand on the crown and pulleys. Considering that the bottle contains 100 ml and that approximately 4 are used per application, it is possible to make 25 wet rides or where you wash the bike, rather in line with other products where, however, the chain requires more maintenance and cleaning. Fully promoted.

Format / price: Flowerpower Wax is available in 100 ml bottles (€ 11.99)

Allpine Extra

The chain degreaser contains the secret of its pine scent in the name. Not only that, it can also be used to degrease discs in case of contamination.

This is the manufacturer's description:

In the development of Allpine Extra, in addition to effectiveness, we had low ecological impact as a priority. The addition of pine oil, a solvent of natural origin, has proved invaluable for these purposes. Allpine Extra is rapidly biodegradable and does not require special disposal precautions (but maybe your lubricant can: if in doubt, refer to the legislation in force). Allpine Extra is not dangerous for the paint of the frame or for the carbon of the wheels, but we still recommend an abundant rinse with water after use on the various surfaces.

A deep cleaning of the chain is possible with Allpine Extra, both with complete immersion - disassembling the chain and dipping it in Allpine Extra - or leaving the chain on the bicycle and applying it using a brush or a chain washing device. Leave Allpine Extra to act for a few minutes to dissolve all the lubricants. Then rinse the chain with water to completely eliminate any oily traces. This is made possible by the formulation of Allpine Extra, which includes surfactants (i.e. soaps) of vegetable origin. The chain will then be perfectly clean: dry it carefully and lubricate it.

Allpine Extra can be applied to brake discs to degrease them: apply to the surface of the disc with a cloth soaked in the product, leave for a few minutes, wash off with water. Dry the disc with a clean rag.

I used Allpine Extra to clean the chain before applying Flowerpower wax. The first attempt was made using the new Chain Eater device, which you see in the photo above. It was not enough to remove all the grease and sludge from the chain, so I disassembled it from the transmission and dipped it in the Effetto Mariposa degreaser in a plastic container, obtaining a good result, improved when I then passed through it on a rag with a still wet chain.

The positive thing, I would say extremely positive, is the fact that you do not have to use gloves or special attention as you should do when using turpentine or white petroleum. On the other hand, the liquid cannot be disposed of in the sink because it contains oil residues and, no longer remembering which oils I have used in the past, I preferred to take everything to landfill along with the various used oils from the forks and shock absorbers.

Format / price: Allpine Extra is available in 500 ml bottles (€ 15.99)

Allpine Light

The Allpine Light detergent was also designed to be biodegradable and harmless to the environment, as well as scented. This is the description of Effetto Mariposa:

Allpine Light is harmless to the environment but very effective against dirt. After using it, you can get on a clean bicycle with a nice pine scent: a good way to start an epic ride.

It is ideal for e-bikes, as there is no need to rinse. If you are in a hurry and a quick cleaning is sufficient, or - in the case of e-bikes - you want to limit the use of water in the presence of electrical contacts, Allpine Light and a rag are enough to clean the bicycle, without need to rinse with water. Allpine Light does not remove the lubricant from the chain, so it is not necessary to relubricate it after such a cleaning.

On the other hand, if the bicycle is very dirty and / or muddy, Allpine Light can clean thoroughly: spray Allpine Light abundantly on the entire bicycle and wait a few minutes to let the product act. Then wash with plenty of water. A sponge or brush is recommended for an optimal result. Dry with a clean cloth. If necessary, use Allpine Light again - without rinsing - to remove any streaks or traces of dirt. Lubricate the bicycle (chain, suspension, joints) after such a thorough cleaning.

I have used it several times, noting that it produces little foam, even when using a brush, but at the same time it does its job well. Mind you, to thoroughly clean the bike you need elbow grease, because the Allpine Light does not work wonders and is less aggressive than other cleaners.

To give you an idea, here is the foam after stirring the water and Allpine with the brush:

Format / price: Allpine Light is available in 1000 ml bottles with vaporizer (€ 13.99), or as a refill without vaporizer (Allpine Light 1000 ml Recharge, € 9.99).

Chain eater
The chain cleaning machine is now a must in the equipment of every self-respecting biker. Personally I have had traumatic experiences with this object of the devil, in the sense that more than once it has lost pieces, dirtying everything, myself included. This is because the brushes and the internals that hold the chain in place are often of very poor quality, even when it comes to famous brands. So you can imagine my skepticism for the Chain Eater, but let's go in order.

This is the description of Effetto Mariposa:

The chain runs straight inside the Chain Eater, tightened at both ends between plastic (PE) blades with the task of keeping as much solvent inside as possible. The washing is performed by six rotating brushes, continuously soaked in the cleaning liquid, which actively remove dirt on each side, pushing the solvent inside the mesh.

Thanks to the elements with slats at the ends, Mangiacatena allows - without wasting solvent - to pedal in both directions. To do this, we recommend keeping the rear wheel of the bicycle off the ground (using a workshop stand or other support).

It is easy to use, just watch this video

Nothing lasts forever, but we have chosen Chain Eater materials and construction for a long life. We also provide a complete set of replacement brushes, the Chain Eater Replacement Kit, to replace what is worn without having to throw everything away. We have chosen to use elements with PE slats at both ends, instead of the more common sponges, for their greater durability and resistance.

Since the chain runs straight inside the Chain Eater, without the need to follow a tortuous path, it is also suitable for single-speed transmissions (for a chain with a maximum width of 9 mm). No problem for traditional 5 to 13 speed transmissions.

All roses and flowers? Well, despite having used it several times with their Allpine Extra degreaser, I managed not to get dirty, not to break it and above all to discreetly clean the chain. I say discreetly because this type of tool cannot work miracles and, if one wants to make the chain as good as new, there are no other solutions than to disassemble it, dip it in the liquid in a plastic container and then pass a rag to remove the residues.

In the photo above you can see the semi-assembled chain eater (no tools needed) after cleaning a chain. The Allpine degreasing liquid, in fact, leaves everything clean without having to put your hand on it. You only see some residue of dirt at the bottom of the tray and the two guides that hold the chain firmly.

Apply enough degreaser until you reach the -Fill- line and pass the chain as shown in the video. It will not be neat as new, but it removes most of the sludge well. Also, if you use a wax lubricant, you won't have sludge and therefore the Chain Eater will be more than enough for post-ride cleaning.

Very comfortable then the handle to hold everything firmly in your hand.

Prices: Chain eater € 29.99. Replacement Kit Chain Eater € 7.99

Cog Brush

We finish the roundup of novelties with the most classic of brushes for cleaning the pinions. There is not much to say except to report the description of Effetto Mariposa.

Cog Brush is a brush specifically designed to remove mud and dirt from chains and gears. It is equipped with two different sets of bristles: the lateral one, more extended and with short and dense bristles, is ideal for chain, crown and sprockets; the one on the tip, small but with longer and harder bristles, reaches the dirt inside the cassette, in the spaces between the sprockets.

The curved and thin handle can be inserted between the sprockets and act against the mud deposited in the cassette (up to 10 speeds), thanks to the teeth in the lower part.

Cog Brush is made of nylon, shockproof and resistant to solvents.
