What mayonnaise has to do with tubeless and much more

Alberto De Gioannini - the mastermind behind Effetto Mariposa - describes himself as a bike nerd. More than that, he is a passionate mountain biker. His drive is to make existing products better or more ecological, as well as to invent problem solvers.

The Effetto Mariposa range can basically be divided into four categories. The success story started with tools, followed by numerous puncture protection products. The bike care collection is brand new and the group of “problem solvers” boasts unusual items.

Tools - the right twist and a quick cut
The brand's first product was the Giustaforza torque wrench. It has been on the market since 2007 and was developed specifically for use in cycling, and is now considered a reference in this field. It is available in different versions. They all have one thing in common, they are easy to use and have a small head for working in the tightest of spaces.

With the Carbocut, the name says it all: It is a small saw for carbon with a diamond blade made of tungsten carbide. It enables a highly precise cutting result in a short time.

Tubeless products - from Caffè to Space Invaders
Already at the beginning of 2000, Alberto learned to appreciate the advantages of tubeless setups. But at that time all sealants were made of natural latex with the addition of ammonia. Believing that a synthetic latex would work better without this toxic gas, he developed Caffélatex. Numerous professional cyclists - such as Cécile and Cédric Ravanel and their Commencal Enduro Team - swear by this tire sealant. Instead of resting on the laurels of the successful product, Effetto Mariposa recently launched a plant-based sealant called Végétalex. Instead of liquid polymers, finely grated olive stones and cellulose fibers as well as xanthan gum, which is even found in mayonnaise, are used.

Every Italian knows: When things have to be done quickly, an espresso is the right choice. The same goes for flat tires. But Effetto Mariposa's is a repair spray that can be used to quickly repair defects by injecting Caffélatex into the Presta valve. In addition to rim tapes, valves and special cleaning agents, the tubeless range also includes the Tyreinvader puncture protection. It is easy to assemble and very light - starting at 53 grams for a 29-inch wheel. The sockliner is made of high-density EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate), a closed-cell polymer commonly used in the athletic footwear industry. This material can withstand strong impacts and is very durable. Instead of "boring" holes, the puncture protection features the aliens from the cult video game Space Invaders from the 1970s. Proof that Alberto takes his work seriously, but doesn't neglect to have fun.

Bicycle care - toothbrush meets flower power
In addition to relatively normal items such as the chain cleaning device Mangiacatena (in English chain eater) or the Cog Brush (toothbrush), this newest product group also includes liquid agents. Flowerpower chain wax, made from sunflower seeds, and Allpine Extra chain cleaner, made from pine oil, sound both familiar and exotic at the same time.

The materials engineer from the Lugano region never rests and says about himself:

«Following the vein of ecological products has opened up a whole new world for me. I have many ideas and I would like to bring many more environmentally friendly bicycle products onto the market. It fascinates me to put my ideas into practice. That makes the difference. It's a small big satisfaction for me when a product works.»

You can be curious about what's to come...
